The Ins & Outs of Modern Round Brilliant Diamonds & Old Mine Cuts

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

MODERN ROUND BRILLIANT VS OLD MINE CUT

The world of diamonds can seem daunting and overwhelming...especially if you are just beginning to research engagement rings. A common question we get asked is "what's the different between modern diamonds vs antique diamonds?" We're here to help explain & explore the differences in a little more detail.

We're highlighting two of our favorite cuts: modern round brilliants (the most popular engagement ring choice) and old mine cuts (one of our personal favorites!).

THE FOREVER FAVE

MODERN ROUND BRILLIANT DIAMONDS

These sparkling beauties are the direct result of years of scientific research and cutting-edge technology. They're known for their sparkle and are popular for a reason: Modern Round Brilliant Diamonds are a masterpiece of precision.

WHY WE LOVE MODERN ROUND BRILLIANTS

Cut with mathematical precision, they showcase a symmetrical shape with precisely angled facets. The iconic round shape and famous brilliance are designed to maximize light performance, making them the ultimate sparkling gemstones.

These diamonds excel at reflecting light back to the wearer, creating a stunning show of rainbows. It's definitely no wonder these are such a popular diamond cut.

AN ODE TO THE PAST

OLD MINE CUT DIAMONDS

This cut of diamonds is one of our favorite for a reason: their old-world look can't be recreated (authentically) today. Looking into one is like staring at a portal into the past.

These beauties were born between the 18th and early 20th centuries and were cut by hand specifically to sparkle in candlight.

WHY WE LOVE OLD MINE CUTS

Old Mine Diamonds showcase an eye-catching, pillow-like shape with soft, rounded corners. Their facets (hand-cut by skilled craftsmen) give them a charmingly irregular appearance. They also are essentially recycled diamonds, as they have been repurposed over the years, being set into the modern trends & styles while still maintaining their vintage look.

They have a unique way of scattering light, creating an alluring "hall of mirrors" effect and offer a warm, romantic glow in an engagement ring or statement pendant.

SO WHICH IS BETTER?

The good news is that, like with most things aesthetic, it all comes down to preference.

If maximum sparkle and modernity is your calling, then the modern round brilliant is for you. If you lean towards the whimsical & a good story to share, then we love the antique cuts like an old mine cut.

Tip #5: Safe Travels

As tempting as it is to wear your new jewels on your latest vacation, we recommend leaving the valuables at home to avoid making yourself more noticeable for anyone looking to target unsuspecting tourists!

Tip #6: Routine Checkup

At least once a year, bring your jewelry back to your designer (or a local jeweler) for a checkup to make sure there is no damage occuring to your fine jewelry. They'll be able to check prongs & assess the piece for you with professional tools.

Tip #7: Sensible Storage

Another obvious one, but make sure you're keeping your jewelry in a dry, secure location. Opt for lined jewelry boxes or individual compartments to keep your jewelry scratch- and tangle-free.
